It is Tuesday and time to write a 'Slice of Life."
Thank you Two Writing Teachers for creating this supportive community
of teacher-writers!
If you and I were home, sipping tea, talking about favorite places to be, I’d assure you I love the mountains. I’d say, put me in the woods, let me hike and climb. The mountains are filled with such beauty and wonder. Yes, mountains are my most favorite place.
But, hey, how can I deny the sea? I may not be a sunbather, but there really is no such thing as a bad day at the beach. It is glorious to walk alongside, and to be amazed.
This old photo shows I have always loved being at the ocean, too.
I’ve been writing a poem a day in 2024, and vacation doesn’t give me a pass. Today’s poem celebrates the wondrous sights of our beach vacation.
Hilton Head Island Low Tide mingles with New Moon Rippling waves begin to dance Alligators sun at the lagoon Osprey hides on a branch Slender Fish jumps high with glee Driftwood floats slowly along Great Heron glides just beneath Yellow Warbler creates a song Shorebirds gather on found wood Dolphins play hide and seek How still Snowy Egret stood As we laze upon the beach
Maureen,
That photo of you as a young girl is lovely. Your poem transports us to your beach day. I continued writing poems during our Hawaii trip. You’re right: We don’t get a break from the challenge. I write my blog posts and poems a day ahead, and I was up until midnight working on today’s poem. The blog ate my evening!
I love writing poems every day. Here on vacation, my photos often give me the inspiration I need. Thanks, Glenda!
Alligators! I have never seen one not caged in. This poem is beautiful and reads well, and makes me feel I am there with you! It’s almost a list of all the things you saw on this beach trip, and the last line sums it up so well.
Denise, there are many, many alligators here. We give them wide berth! There have been some tragic incidents through the years – rare, very rare. It is quite surprising to be pedaling one’s beach bike and happen upon one.
I should have included a photo of an alligator or two! We’ve seen probably 20 so far.
Maureen, I adore your photographs. We’re on the same page today as far as posts. I love your use of catalog in your poem today. Your ending was my favorite part because it sounds so relaxing, and I personally adore the word laze. Enjoy your vacation!
Maureen, there is such visual imagery and sensory feeling here in your lines, and I love the rhyme scheme. I love the photo of you as a child there at the beach, and now there with your family. What a lovely post to capture all the beauty of the memories that you are making!
