SOLSC #10 – Jazz

It is Tuesday and time to write a 'Slice of Life."

I was absolutely enchanted as the jazz singer improvised this Aretha Franklin song. Her name is Louise Spencer, and I particularly enjoyed how her voice dropped lower and lower as she “punched” those last eight words, the title of the song. She sang every song in the set with such gorgeous volume, playing with the lyrics – adding syllables unexpectedly, using repetition for emphasis, varying the range of her voice within a single phrase. What a joy to hear her, to be in this jazz club listening to live music by these gifted musicians.

All day today, I’ve been reliving the fun we had this last night of vacation, visiting the local jazz club and listening to the Lavon Stevens Band.

Of all the ‘ear worms’ I’ve had stuck in my head - this is one of the very best!

Another fond memory – Lavon’s music is amazing, and I know him and have listened to his music there on Hilton Head many many nights. You are bringing so many memories, making me homesick to go back to the island to visit. I’m so glad you took the trip and enjoyed yourself and had a great time. You got to see and do a lot of fun things, including experiencing the music – – and there are some amazingly talented artists in Beaufort County! Thanks so much for sharing these slices this week.

    • Wow, Kim! I would love to hear more of your memories of Hilton Head. I was in Hilton Head with my brother and sister-in-law, and they had visited The Jazz Corner several times in earlier visits to the island; this was my husband’s and my first time there. I really loved it; the Lavon Stevens Band is so talented. Just beautiful!

  2. Maureen, the music sounds wonderful. I could sing along with those last eight words because of the way you described it and wrote them out, I feel like I could hear a bit of the jazz you experienced. Good job getting music across with your words.

    • Thank you so much! I was struggling with how to make the music come alive, similar to how I was hearing it in my head.

  3. Maureen, oh, I would have loved to hear this too. Sounds like you’ve had a magnificent vacation. I’ve been struggling to post/reply this week as we have done a lot of traveling, too, so I understand the struggle. Music is so inspiring. Glad you got to enjoy listening to a great band/singer. I also really like the look of your blog. I need to work on mine, but who knows when I’ll be able to sit down and do that.

    • Thank you, Barb! It was a grand time, the grand finale of our vacation. Thanks for compliments on my blog, too; it is a relatively new blog template (August? Sept?) and I am still figuring out all of its quirks.
